Eye development: Notch lends a handedness

نویسنده

چکیده

The arrangement of photoreceptors in the ommatidia of the Drosophila compound eye is polarized, having a handedness or chirality. Notch signalling helps determine this handedness, first by establishing a signalling center at the eye equator, and second by mediating a choice between two photoreceptor fates

Eye preference in humans and its correlation with eye dominance, visual acuity and handedness

Eye preference in humans and its correlation with eye dominance, visual acuity and handedness. Eye preference in humans and its correlation with eye dominance, visual acuity and handedness. Handedness is the most obvious expression of lateralized behaviour in humans. However, there is only limited knowledge about other forms of lateralized behaviour, e.g. preferential use of an eye and whether ...

Split ends antagonizes the Notch and potentiates the EGFR signaling pathways during Drosophila eye development

The Notch and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) signaling pathways interact cooperatively and antagonistically to regulate many aspects of Drosophila development, including the eye. How output from these two signaling networks is fine-tuned to achieve the precise balance needed for specific inductive interactions and patterning events remains an open and important question. Previously, we...

Handedness of children determines preferential facial and eye movements related to hemispheric specialization.

BACKGROUND Despite repeated demonstrations of asymmetries in several brain functions, the biological bases of such asymmetries have remained obscure. OBJECTIVE To investigate development of lateralized facial and eye movements evoked by hemispheric stimulation in right-handed and left-handed children. METHOD Fifty children were tested according to handedness by means of four tests: I. Mono-...

A subset of notch functions during Drosophila eye development require Su(H) and the E(spl) gene complex.

The Notch signalling pathway is involved in many processes where cell fate is decided. Previous work showed that Notch is required at successive steps during R8 specification in the Drosophila eye. Initially, Notch enhances atonal expression and promotes atonal function. After atonal autoregulation has been established, Notch signalling represses atonal expression during lateral specification. ...

Head-turning asymmetries during kissing and their association with lateral preference.

A head-turning bias to the right side is one of the earliest functional asymmetries in human development and is already present during the final weeks of gestation. To test whether head-turning preference is related to other lateral preferences in adults, kissing behaviour of participants towards a symmetrical doll was observed to assess their spontaneous head-turning preference. Additionally, ...
